About me

Daniel Shapiro is Enterprise Architect for United Nations Federal Credit Union (http://www.unfcu.org/). UNFCU has over 100,000 members (current UN employees, retirees and their immediate family members) in 200 countries and territories spanning six continents. As of 2014 UNFCU has close to $4 Billion under management and over $30 Million in annual revenue. During his 10 years tenure at UNFCU Daniel has led a number of enterprise initiatives ranging from complete overhaul of UNFCU production datacenter and managing a group of employees and consultants to transfer all the IT systems consisting of over 200 servers, multiple SAN and telecommunications lines, and over 300 desktops from the old location to the new one with minimal impact on the business. The latest completed accomplishments are the build out a brand new hot-standby Disaster Recovery data center in another state with over 50 seats for helpdesk and staff employees and complete overhaul of UNFCU’s virtualization platform combining multiple VMWare ‘islands’ into enterprise wide ESXi 5.1 cluster spanning Production and DR facilities.

Prior to joining UNFCU Daniel worked as the Data Center Manager for MODELS.com, a major US e-commerce portal. At Models.com Daniel supervised large data center build, part of which was a self-engineered SAN solution enabling sharing business data between SUN and Wintel based hosts eliminating the necessity of buying a separate SAN unit and saving the company over $500,000 of capital investment. Daniel was also in charge of day-to-day IT operations including managing a group of programmers, help desk technicians, and getting closely involved with IT vendor management.

Prior to joining MODELS.com Daniel served as Vice President of IT in Merrill Lynch (NYSE: BAC). There Daniel proposed, built and later was in charge of day-to-day support of its largest SAN database environment. He was also on a panel of decision makers to approve different vendors’ SAN hardware/topologies when Merrill Lynch decided to standardize on its SAN infrastructure.

The other accomplishments consist of managing and coordinating the development of Road Runner internet access service through direct interactions with NY1, HBO, CNN, MSNBC and other parties involved in the production for Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), the second-largest cable company in the US.
