Very few people in the Caribbean are automatically known by their first name and Meiling (Esau) is the tour de force behind the premier fashion house not only in Trinidad but throughout the Caribbean. This reputation are the fruits of over thirty years of hard work, tenacity, creativity and always keeping true to her mantra of producing high quality products with superb design, craftsmanship and wearability. Meiling started her business in the early 70s in renovated garage with just two seamstresses and became incorporated in 1982 as Meiling Inc. Ltd. The company founded a successful corporate uniform division which outfits employees throughout the Caribbean. Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards including in 2012, the Ocean Style Award last week “in recognition of tremendous effort, great accomplishments and lasting impact on Caribbean Fashion”. Meiling can truly lay claim to the description as an ‘iconic designer’. In 2013, she is the only local designer (and one of only two women) to receive the National Icon Award of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. These awards and recognitions are the fruits of over thirty years of hard work, tenacity, creativity and always keeping true to her mantra of not compromising on quality, design or workmanship. Never to rest on her past laurels, Meiling is the first to say that she is only as good as her last collection and she is constantly pushing the envelope for innovation and excellence.
